Today I want to draw our series to a close on what are the crowns in the bible and today I want to share the 5th crown that we as believers ought to strive for.
The 5th crown is
The Crown of Glory or the Shepherd’s Crown (1 Peter 5:1-4)
To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
This is a good crown for us to work today especially if you’re a leader or a Pastor in a church. Here Paul tells us what you need to do as leaders of the people you look over. He says we are to Watch over the people we have under us and we should do it with a willing heart. Lots of leaders only do what they have to do because they have to do it but Paul is saying here that you should look after the people because you care for them.
Not only that but he said you should be eager to serve them as well. Every person under you always ask the question ‘Does my Leader care for me?’ If he doesn’t care for them they will not follow him and as a leader you are called to care for the people under you and that means serving them. Some leaders want to be served but Jesus was the perfect example when he said he came to serve and not to be served.
Another thing you as a leader needs to do is to be an example to the people under you. If you tell them not to smoke then you shouldn’t smoke. If you tell them not to drink then you shouldn’t drink. If you tell them they are to love, then you ought to love. You need to be an example to them.
Now even if you are not a leader or don’t have a leadership title I am sure that there are people under you whom you can serve. Why not be a blessing to them and serve them as Jesus served the people he came into contact with.
Take some time this week and review these crowns and start taking action on working to earn the crowns that God has promised to you if you will remain faithful to him.
